Sentence Correction & Clarity — Test 1

Correct Answer: C. The house, which was built in 1950, needs repairs.
Explanation: A non-defining clause uses 'which' with commas. 'That' cannot introduce a comma clause, and 'who' is used for people.

Correct Answer: A. Walking down the road, I saw a snake.
Explanation: A participial phrase must refer to the subject that follows it. In the wrong options, the snake appears to be the one walking (a dangling modifier).

Correct Answer: D. He is not only intelligent but also hardworking.
Explanation: 'Not only ... but also' should frame parallel elements (two adjectives here). At the start of a sentence it needs inversion: 'Not only is he ...'.

Correct Answer: C. He ate only two slices of bread.
Explanation: Place 'only' directly before the word it limits (here, two slices).

Correct Answer: B. He decided to return.
Explanation: Avoid redundancy such as 'return back again'.
